The Computer Won!

A computer beat a human at Go!

Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing.

That's nothing! I have regularly been beaten by a computer at go!

And to put the achievement in some perspective, while this is the first time any computer has beaten a professional Go player, it was a European master who was beaten. Europe is considered near the lower end of Go players, when it can beat Korean or Japanese players then we have a story.

The fact that the computer won is not so important. What is more is how it won, or rather the kind of "thought process" it used : learning from experience. THAT is important. Omnitron would be proud.

Oh man. The half of me that plays Go and has always been smug about its complexity and has always said, "Well, computers still have a long way to go to master this game" is really kinda sweating and off in the corner. The half of me that loves the progression of technology is thrilled. I'm at battle with myself.

It's only managed to beat a 2-dan pro, though. The match I'm super interested in is the 8-dan pro match in March.

Will your internal battle be resolved in a game of Go at a table with two chairs, where you jump back and forth from one chair to the other and use different voices to narrate your moves?

The space/time continuum was broken when I got here. Honest.
