Released art

As we know, there are many artists working on Spirit Island, and many of them have released some of their artwork for the game. Since they all prefer different platforms, it's a little hard to track it all down. I'm going to compile a list of the pieces I find here.

The artists, as listed at the end of the Kickstarter video, are

  • Jason Behnke
  • Loic Belliau
  • Rocky Hammer
  • Sydni Kruger
  • Nolan Nasser
  • Jorge Ramos
  • Moro Rogers
  • Graham Sternberg (misspelled in the credits)
  • Shane Tyree
  • Joshua Wright

Adam Rebottaro is also credited for Art Design, but I don't know that he did any of the principal illustrations himself. In addition, I found one artist so far who appears to have done some work but isn't (yet) credited:

  • Beth Zyglowicz, SpaceTurtleStudios

Here's a list I will update with released illustrations by each artist:

Rocky Hammer
https://www.behance.net/gallery/29788809/Spirit-Island-Lightnings-Swift-Strike
http://rockyhammer.com/

Principal design for Lightning’s Swift Strike. Public illustrations include

Amusingly, this is three out of the four unique powers, and the fourth one (Harbingers of the Lightning) is carefully hidden in the shot of Lightning's unique powers in the KS video (at 1:28). I guess it's not ready for release yet.. EDIT: But it's in the video at 3:27, as revealed on Kickstarter update #7.

Sydni Kruger
http://sydnikruger.com/

Principal design for Vital Strength of Earth.

Nolan N. Nasser
http://www.n3art.com/
https://www.facebook.com/nolannasser
https://twitter.com/Nolan_N_Nasser

Appears to have done a lot, including principal design for River Surges in Sunlight. I'm guessing on the correspondence between illustration and card, feel free to post other guesses.

Jorge Ramos
http://www.joremdesign.com/

Moro Rogers
http://mrogersportfolio.blogspot.com/2010/12/blog-post.html

Graham Sternberg
https://www.behance.net/gallery/23524155/Spirit-Island
http://www.grahamsternberg.com/

Shane Tyree
http://www.shane-tyree.com/portfolio/index.php

No publically identified art, although I'm reminded of the style of Bringers of Dreams and Nightmares.

Joshua Wright
Appears to be http://www.heliocentric.com.au/

Beth Zyglowicz (Space Turtle Studios)

Great work collecting these together, I hadn't seen a lot of them and they are gorgeous.

Just assume I'm always doing that.

Damn it, Ronway!

Thanks! I'm not done yet: I added notes on Sydni Kruger, Joshua Wright, and Shane Tyree.

EDIT: And Beth Zyglowicz.

The best part is, a lot of these are the perfect size for a desktop wallpaper

That's right. They're really detailed! And they're going to appear on these small cards.

Updated with some more Heart of the Wildfire art from Nolan Nasser. I love the diversity of feeling in the artwork: contrast the incredibly cheerful art for what looks to be a very destructive spirit for Heart of the Wildfire with the quite dour unknown spirit by Moro Rogers, or A Year of Perfect Stillness vs. Tsunami.

Ya, it reminds me of Magic the Gathering. It is quite refreshing to see so many different art styles.

EDIT: I have a feeling Heart of the Wildfire and Smokey won't get along very well.

By the way, welcome, Bunston! I haven't noticed you much on the boards before. Did you just print out the PnP? How many games have you played?

Ya, I found the PnP. I've played 6 games so far, one with each Spirit and then 2 more with Vital Strength of the Earth. I have to wait to play it with other people for a couple of weeks unfortunately, but the solo games have been quite fun. I really like how this game actually has a solo play option (I'm looking at you Sentinels), and each Spirit feels unique and interesting. I'm really looking forward to seeing the rest of the Spirit boards and their unique powers. I'm a sucker for co-op games (video or board) where each player has unique strengths and weaknesses they bring to the team.

How did you find the difficulty level? Did you use the Adversary and/or Scenario included in the PnP rulebook?

I haven’t played the adversary or the scenario yet, I'd probably play those when I finally get a group together. I find the earth and lightning spirits are easier than the shadow and water spirits, but as of now I only have one play on three of them, so I hardly have a good sample size.

I do really appreciate how your unique cards and innate power can smooth out unfavorable power draws. You are guaranteed to have at least the basic tools you need at all times.

I went through the Kickstarter video, looking for all the art pieces I could find. There are several questionable identifications; let me know if you have suggestions!

  • 0:08: Panoramic view of a valley.
  • 0:12: Volcanic Eruption (major power)
  • 0:16: Massive storm on the coast. Could be Tsunami, although there was another candidate for that.
  • 0:18: The animal spirit "behind the leaves" drawn by Moro Rogers
  • 0:20: Serpent Slumbering Beneath the Island
  • 0:23: Perhaps Dark and Tangled Woods, given the narration
  • 0:25: River Surges in Sunlight with a Dahan spirit-speaker. Not drawn by Nolan Nasser, so not one of the Unique Powers. Maybe one of the Calls (Isolation, etc)?
  • 0:29: Tidal Boon, Ocean's Unique power, also in Kickstarter Update #7
  • 0:31: Guard the Healing Land? Artist: Sydni Kruger
  • 0:33: Call to Migrate, Graham Sternberg
  • 0:36: Bringer of Dreams and Nightmares. Looks to be a Unique Power, which have not been revealed yet.
  • 0:38: Pull Beneath the Hungry Earth?
  • 0:41: Vital Strength of Earth, looking a little different from its other art. One spirit helping another, in any case.
  • 0:44: Raging Storm of Lightning’s Swift Strike, by Rocky Hammer
  • 0:50: Pact of the Joined Hunt, by Jorge Ramos, featuring the animal spirit from 0:18.
  • 0:52: The Trees and Stones Speak of War, Graham Sternberg
  • 0:56: Moons over the island. Not sure what this is representing.
  • 0:59: Invaders on the shores. This is the back of the Stage 1 Invader deck.
  • 1:03: Invaders lost in the mists.
  • 1:07: Conquistadors fighting growth in a jungle. Several possibilities here.
  • 1:10: More invaders in the darkness.
  • 1:12: What I guessed to be Drought, by Nolan Nasser
  • 1:15: Land of Haunts and Embers, by Jorge Ramos
  • 1:18: Rouse the Trees and Stones?
  • 1:39: A shot of Draw of the Fruitful Earth and Rituals of Destruction, which I haven't seen otherwise.
  • 3:07: Thunderspeaker’s main art
  • 3:15: Dahan being blessed, perhaps by Thunderspeaker (although, if so, in what appears to be a male form)
  • 3:17: Ghostly Dahan attacking at night. Veil the Night’s Hunt?
  • 3:20: This was my guess for Tsunami, by Nolan Nasser
  • 3:23: Homesteads on fire. Visions of Fiery Doom?
  • 3:24: Vital Strength of Earth flying, which presumably involves cooperation between two spirits.
  • 3:27: Harbingers of Lightning, unique power for Lightning's Swift Strike
  • 3:31: Ghosts chasing off invaders. Delusions of Danger?
  • 3:33: Ocean's Hungry Grasp
  • 3:36: Lightning’s Swift Strike and Vital Strength of Earth, doing something together.

Someone already pointed this out somewhere else, but I love how the spirits are doing some really messed up things to the explorers. There doesn't seem to really be a true good guy in this scenario, just two groups of people doing terrible stuff to each other.

Yah. Bloodwrack Plague is not something you expect to see from "good guys".

I guess the spirits are meant to be neither good nor bad, they just want to protect their lands (and in fact HAVE to if they don't want to be destroyed themselves) so they are using any means at their disposal to rid themselves of the invaders.

Let's not forget they aren't human, or even close. It's like us using bug spray to exterminate insects - dangerous insects that are going to take over our house and kill us if we don't stop them.

Just assume I'm always doing that.

Damn it, Ronway!

So much agreeing here.  Why would gods answer to our standards?  Perhaps someday ants will judge humans, it might be interesting what our actual crimes would be.

Devouring Ants, perhaps?

Only yesterday I overheard a couple of ants discussing my poor life choices.

By the way, I want it to be acknowledged that one of the artists is named Rocky Hammer.  That's a good name.

It looks like a awesome character, if a little glum!

And I'm excited that your Sharp Fangs Behind the Leaves will make it in.
