Types of paint

We're looking at painting some Tactics miniatures. It's been a while since I painted any models of any kind - gosh, over a decade, really. Then, I just used the standard Testor's paints.

My local game store carries only a huge assortment of Citadel paints, and no other kinds. They are all labeled by the type of thing in the Citadel universe they are supposed to go on, along with what layer paint they are (base coat, detail, etc). Strikes me as simultaneously helpful, and a sneaky razor-and-blades marketing scheme.

My question is, how do those paints correspond to the generic model paints I'm familiar with? I've no compunction against spraying my miniatures with a primer and then doing Testor's paints over that, but for colors I find it annoying to mix or special metallic effects and the like, it might be more convenient to grab a Citadel...what? "Layer" paint?

I also know that these are different kinds of paint (clearly...the Citadel paints don't have flammability warnings!), but I don't know what kind the Citadel paint is. I'm wondering if I'll run into any trouble trying to layer both on the same miniature.

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure Citadel paints are acrylic, if that helps.

Just assume I'm always doing that.

Damn it, Ronway!

You can totally layer and blend Citadel paints without any trouble.

The space/time continuum was broken when I got here. Honest.

Well, I think I'm probably doing okay at this!

It helps that my other hobby involves doing tiny things with Pigma Micron 005s.

If you mean literally: they have no clear coats yet. That comes next!

If you mean in the Firefly sense: Thank you!
